The size of the house and type of support offered makes it unique within Brighton and Hove. With a maximum of four young people living there at any one time, the house is far more like a home than an institution.
The house provides a place of safety for young people that are escaping abusive relationships. It allows the young person to step back from a situation and identify issues which can then be worked through with the project team.
Over the last 12 months the team has dealt with issues ranging from drug and alcohol problems, budgetting, finding work, self-harming, sexual health and well-being through to the fundamental skills of cooking and cleaning. It is rare that problems exist in isolation and the staff work alongside the young people to unpack the often complex and inter-related issues.
The house takes referrals from Brighton and Hove City Council's Housing Options team who take initial responsibility for assessing need. Within the first few days of arriving at the Safe House a full needs assessment is carried out with the young person and this allows the support programme to be tailored according to the individual needs.
